Major British figure from the late 1950s onwards, recently included in the Tate Art & the Sixties show. Studied Royal College 1954-57: lived New York 1959-61, first solo exhibition at the Green Gallery 1961. Important solo shows soon followed: ICA 1962, Whitechapel 1966, Venice Biennale 1970, MOMA Oxford 1972, Hayward Gallery 1973, Tate 1975. Having lived for periods of time in America, has been based in New York from 1976. Largely due to the huge scale of his work, most of his exhibitions have been in USA: Richard Feigen Gallery (five shows 1966-94), Knoedler Gallery (three 1980-90), Tony Shafrazi Gallery 1995; in London at Flowers East (four 1995-2000), and Bernard Jacobson (1996 & 1997). Work in numerous group / survey museum shows since 1960.
